Over the past two decades, the topic of concussion in sports as risen from total obscurity to the public spotlight.  Concerns about the short-term and long-term effects of concussion and repetitive head impact exposure now dominate the national narrative surrounding contact sports. Major scientific advances have been achieved over the past decade that now inform evidence-based approaches to injury management and return to play after acute concussion. Questions are emerging, however, about the potential long-range effects of repetitive concussion on neurologic health. This presentation will provide an overview of the progress realized over the past two decades and future research directions to advance our understanding of concussion. Dr. Michael McCrea has been an active researcher in the neurosciences, with numerous scientific publications, book chapters, and national and international lectures on the topic of traumatic brain injury.
